Every fall, all school councils give their superintendent a summary of their school/community’s priorities in the event the school will be having a change in principal. As your school council, we are asking all parents to give us feedback regarding what you think the priorities for our school are. The following are some examples:
- true parental involvement including innovative ways to promote a diverse School Council
- support for the highly valued range of unique programs (eg. Arts, health and wellness, student leadership, equity, special education, etc.)
- community partnerships
- communication of School Improvement Plans, school budget, school safety plan and school staffing proposals (elementary) to parents, the School Council and the school community.
- visible administrator who actively interacts with students and school community.
- support and positive change for special needs students within the school including support for implementing IEPs
You can send us your responses by submitting (no more than 5 per family) in the comment section below*, and you can attend a meeting being held to discuss this (next Council meeting: Tuesday November 6th). If you are interested in helping to prepare the final draft of the document, we encourage you to contact us.
We appreciate your time in responding to this request and value your feedback.
Notes from the October 2nd meeting:
- When documenting a school need, make it specific enough to target the community's need.
Examples of school needs include 'My child's school is a safe and healthy environment," and 'my child reaches their full potential in numeracy and literacy.'"- A copy of a previous year's "Principal Profile" (different format from the currently requested Statement of School Needs PDF) can be seen in this PDF file.
For more information about the Statement of School Needs, please visit the Parent Involvement Advisory Committee document, "Parent User Guide."

Examples of school needs include:
ReplyDelete- My child's school is a safe and healthy environment,
- My child reaches their full potential in numeracy and literacy.
In order of importance (most important first):
ReplyDelete1. A leader who can foster a safe, nurturing, compassionate, positive and respectful learning enviroment for students, staff and parents.
2. Sees each child as a whole individual without pigeon-holing them into rigid developmental norms. (Someone who is sensitive and patient with developmental outliers.)
3. Respects and celebrates the cultural, socioeconomic and religious diversity of the community.
4. Consistently supports parent involvement in the school. (Welcomes parent volunteers. Open-minded and embraces collaboration with the school council.)
5. Enthusiasm and commitment to continuously monitor the school environment to ensure all students reach their fullest potential.
On the whole, I feel that the school is doing well in providing a good, healthy and safe learning environment.
ReplyDeleteWhat I miss most however is to get to know the parents and the kids in the class. The parent-teacher nights are on an individual basis and there is no sense of a community of parents for a specific class. So what I would like to be strengthened is the class community by having one meeting opportunity with all the parents at the same time to get to know each other.
Abstract Statement: Valleyfield encourages parents from the same class meeting each other and provides the necessary logistical support.
I would also like to know more about the discipline policy of the school - there are four or even five kids in my child's class who are continuously interrupting the class making teaching impossible sometimes, at least that is what I hear. I therefore would like to see more support for teachers in terms of strategies how to deal with a group of disruptive students. And I wonder where the parents of the students are and how a less disruptive learning environment can be created.
Abstract statement: Valleyfield encourages positive discipline that respects the integrity of the disruptive child and the integrity of the child that wants to learn. Valleyfield provides resources for teachers to maintain integrity for both.
I have no idea how to write abstract and concise statements.
Improving Student Achievement - through a strong literacy and mathematic programs to achieve students potential.
ReplyDeleteInproving Student Achievement - through a balance of arts & physical activities offered during lunch and after school.
(extra-curricular activities)
Parent & Community Engagement - supporting parental roles/partners in the school.
Ensuring a safe & caring school culture - we need a safe environment for our children and we need to teach respect of the different cultures to all students.
Strong Interpersonal skills - with a vision and strong leadership to encourage innovative ideas & learning to our students.
Ranked in level of importance:
ReplyDelete1)Maintaining a safe, nurturing, positive & respectful learning environment for students, staff and parents
* I feel that the school backyard would be safer with a fence around it's perimeter.
2)Focusing on high academic expectations for students, and fostering a love of learning
3)Encouraging continuous professional development & support for teachers
4)Supportive of parents' involvement in the school
5)Ensures fairness and respect is present in all aspects of school life.
